The puppies were found just before noon on Sunday, Jan. 6, when the Middletown Police Department received a call from a resident about a bag of deceased puppies found on the side of Preston Avenue, said Middletown Lt. Heather Desmond.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the puppies were approximately two weeks old, black in color with some white on chin, chest, and feet.
The puppies were all male and appeared to be a possible poodle or cocker spaniel mixed breed, Desmond said.
The puppies were transported to Pieper Olsen where they were examined and stored until they could be transported to the lab for a necropsy to determine the cause of death. It was estimated that the puppies had been dead for a few hours.
The Middletown Animal Control officers will be conducting an investigation into the death of the puppies, the department said.
"Someone may know of a dog that just had puppies and they are no longer around," Desmond said. "These puppies would have been too young to adopt and should have remained with their mother."
